Gearing Up for the 2022 Sketching Season!

The fountain pens I’m starting out with, subject to change at any moment

My last post was on April 2, 2021. At that point, as I also noted today in my Fox Studio blog, I’d run out of gas and did almost no art for the rest of the year. But that appears to be over and I’m chomping at the bit to get out in the field with my pens, watercolors and gouache! This is the current mix of fountain pens I have filled and ready to go. From left to right: Pilot Plumix EF/Noodler’s Sequoia Green, Noodler’s Plumix EF/ Daniel Smith Walnut Ink, Pilot Plumix/ Harbin Cafe de Iles, Platinum Preppy/Diamine Espresso, Platinum Preppy/Black?, Pilot Kakuno EF/Herbin Perle Noire, Pilot Kakuno EF/Black?/ Pilot Kakuno/Herbin Lie Des The, Wang Sun/Noodler’s Black. Facing at bottom: Carbon Platinum Ink Pen/?, Rotring Art Pen/Rotring ink.
I don’t expect to use all these pens all the time, but will winnow them down. Or maybe not. Drawing time will tell. I’ve also put together a dip pen field kit and I’ll cover that in the next post.
You might have noticed that there are a number of browns: Daniel Smith Walnut Ink, Harbin Cafe de Iles, Diamine Expreso and Herbin Lie Des The. I’m looking for The Perfect Brown. I still have five to test drive in the field but I’ve done sample blocks of all of them and here they are…

Quite an impressive range of “brown”, both warm and cool.
I’d also like to note that all the animal heads were done freehand from photos I’ve taken over the years.
